Do-It-Yourself Vinyl Siding Repair Isn’t Difficult

Vinyl siding, although very durable, can be damaged. When you notice your siding has one or more areas of damage, you may be tempted to call the professionals in to make the necessary Vinyl Siding Repair. If the area is small, however, you can complete this task yourself and in a matter of minutes. A zip tool will be needed to make the repair, yet it can be picked up at any home improvement store for the price of a cup of fancy coffee. Once you have this tool in hand, you can unzip the piece and pop in a new one.

Begin at one end of the piece which has been damaged. Push the zip tool under this piece until it hooks the bottom lip. When you have the lip hooked, pull the tool down and out to unhook it from the other siding and then slide the tool along the edge. This will pull the siding away from the home. You will then need to repeat this process with the piece of siding above the one you just removed to exposed the nails used to hold the damaged piece in place. Remove these nails and throw away the damaged siding.

Take the new siding piece and slide it into place, making sure to push firmly until the lower lip locks into place. It should be securely connected to the piece below it before you nail the upper edge. It is best to nail near the old nail holes, but not in them, and leave approximately 1/32″ between the head of the nail and the siding. This allows the siding to move freely. If you nail too tight, your siding will buckle in warm weather.

Next take the zip tool and lock the upper piece over the repaired siding. Again, you need to start at one end and pull the lower lip down, twisting your zip tool slightly to force this edge into position. As you slide the zip tool over the piece, you’ll need to push on the vinyl behind the tool using your free hand to snap this piece into place.

Complete your Vinyl Siding Repair when the weather is warm. Freezing temperatures may lead to inflexible siding and cracking. If you don’t feel confident completing this repair or believe the job is too big, call in the experts. They will gladly do the work for you.
