Bollywood The Beautiful

Art house or foreign films, if you were lucky, were part of your upbringing. Learning to read subtitles through an entire movie or sitting through “Dr. Zhivago” and its intermission were parts of childhood you may have had trouble with at the time, but may now cherish as wonderfully instructive experiences that helped to shape your taste and sense of culture. As America sits on the edge of its seat waiting for the next “Fast and Furious” to come out or the next vampire themed teenage drama to spring on the box office, countries and cultures across the globe continue to put out movies that challenge its audience in ways Americans are not use to. One such film industry is Bollywood. Bollywood, the amalgamation of Bombay (the former name for Mumbai) and Hollywood, has been producing classics since the 30’s and recently (the 2000’s) has garnered a somewhat cult following here in America largely in part because of what appears to us as whimsical costumes, exotic and extravagant dance scenes tied together by earnest love stories. In fact, this love affair with Bollywood films helped to inspire “Moulin Rouge!”, which in part helped to revive interest in American musical films in America.

Bollywood Today
Today, the Bollywood of catchy musicals and old Hindi standards is as modern as its American counterpart. While classic Bollywood has developed a reputation by American cinema as strictly musicals or gangster films or simply foreign films, access to web pages with the latest Bollywood news and gossips leaves little room for romance. Tragically, Bollywood actors and actresses seem to suffer from the same insecurities and ill-tempered stunts as Hollywood actors. The film industry that seemed so classic and regal now seems to long for the same tired publicity. Or do they?

Bollywood Press
If you find Bollywood fascinating and want to stay in touch with all the latest Bollywood news and gossips, the information is out there. There are many sites out there for gossip, and it’s interesting to read through the feeds and see how they parallel. This format is an excellent opportunity for Bollywood actors and actresses to break into American cinema. Because foreign films always had a certain romantic quality, it’s hard to see the “behind the scenes shots” of these actors and actresses. Perhaps it’s because only the really great foreign films make it over to American theaters; regardless, on the Internet, nothing is sacred. Bollywood will continue to produce breath taking musicals and Hollywood will continue to pump out major blockbusters such as Transformers and consumers from both cultures will continue enjoy reading the gossip about the actors in these films.
