Choosing the Right Gymnastics Leotards for Your Team’s Competition

by | Mar 22, 2017 | Clothing

Gymnastics leotards are one of the most important components of any competition. The right fit is critical as is style and design. Here are a few tips on how to choose the right leotards for your team:

Right Fit
A leotard that is too tight will be uncomfortable and can be distracting. It can also be cumbersome to move in, making smooth, precise movements more difficult. Leotards that are too loose can be dangerous as it can catch on the equipment. The fit needs to be tight and fit enough so judges can gauge muscle definition and form.

Sleeves
Leotards come in sleeveless, three-quarter and full-length sleeve styles. Sleeveless styles are not usually recommended for competitions. It’s really a matter of personal preference as to whether to go with full-length or three-quarter sleeves. While either one will keep gymnasts warmer in winter, some gymnasts find full-length sleeves uncomfortable.

Fabric
There are several choices for fabrics, including metallic, lycra, velvet and nylon. Metallic fabrics are flashy and bright, but don’t have a lot of give to them; lycra has plenty of give and is one of the most comfortable fabrics to choose; velvet is not as popular as it was in the 1970’s, but they show well and are quite durable. The downside is that they can be hot; Nylon is also stretchy and has a lot of give.

Back
The most popular back types include racer, keyhole, backless, and tank. The type you choose will depend on your personal style; however, if you are choosing a wide open back, keep in mind it will be harder to cover undergarments like bras.

Gymnastics leotards come in a wide variety of styles and colors, and when choosing one for your competition, consider your own style along with practical factors like fit and fabric.
