Cleaning Terrazzo Floors: Mistakes to Avoid

Your terrazzo floors are tough and with proper care, can last for decades. But even the best terrazzo floors won’t stand a chance if you make cleaning mistakes that deal extensive damage to it. So here are some cleaning mistakes you should avoid at all costs:

Thinking it’s like granite

Your terrazzo floors are softer than granite, says Article Space, so they won’t stand up to the same level of abuse that granite floors can. Instead, they’re easily stained and worn down so you’ll need to be extra careful with the cleaning materials you use.

Cleaning with vinegar

This is one of the worst things you can do to your terrazzo floors. Vinegar way acidic for your floors and can take the shine off. Worst, it can etch the floor’s surface, leaving behind unsightly marks. These marks aren’t going to come off in a wash so you’ll need to buff and refinish your entire floor to get rid of the marks. That’s going to entail so much work so spare yourself the future expense and trouble by keeping vinegar off your floors.

Using abrasives and hard materials

Don’t go with abrasive cleaning materials. Neither should you go at it with hard cleaning tools that can scratch or scuff the surface. Go with chamois or other soft cloths that you can use to wipe the floor with. No need for harsh cleaning solutions as well. All you need is water to get those floors to shine.

Letting spills set in

If you wait awhile before you clean up spills, this could be a reason why your floors aren’t looking as bright and polished as they should. Leaving spills to dry can stain your floors and that’s the last thing you want to happen. So make sure you wipe those spills as soon as you can. That’ll prevent them from seeping into the floor.
