Fluoropolymer: The Nonstick Coating Of Choice

by | Jun 27, 2017 | Business

The condition is known as “sticking” results when molecules become more strongly attracted to the surface of any item or component than to each other. A non-stick situation occurs when molecules cling together, but not to the surface. Finishing companies combat sticking by applying a nonstick coating to the substrate surface. Among the products of choice for such applications is a group called the polymers. In particular, preference is shown for a classification of polymers – the fluoropolymers.

The Fluoropolymers

The fluoropolymers are a synthetic grouping of polymer plastics that possess quantifiable properties such as non-sticking. Industrial preference for a specific type of fluoropolymer will largely depend upon whether the intent is to repel oleophobics e.g. oils, fats or water. However, this is not to discount or ignore other significant factors such as:

 * Temperature
 * Substrate material
 * Abrasion
 * Corrosion
 * Process

Both environmental and technical concerns will have an influence on which fluoropolymer is the most suitable for the application.

Choosing a Specific Fluoropolymer

After factoring in the various issues, the choice of which type to use will become clearer. The three most common types of fluoropolymers for in use nonstick coating are:

 * Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE): This is the most common material applied to the substrate surface to achieve non-sticking properties

 * Perfluoroalkoxy (PFA): This type of polymer possesses properties quite similar to PTFE

 * Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene (FEP): This is copolymer consists of hexafluoropropylene and tetrafluoroethylene with properties similar to those of PTFE

Any of these three can provide the substrate surface of the material with a non-stick, anti-corrosive, durable coating.

Fluoropolymers: More than a Nonstick Coating

Today, technology continues to explore the capabilities of fluoropolymers to provide a nonstick coating. New co-polymer technologies are improving the capabilities of this thermoplastic to provide improved performance capabilities. Significantly, the research is also providing more information on the capabilities of fluoropolymers to do more than simply provide non-sticking properties.
