How a Vertical Form Fill Seal Machine Can Help Expand a Company’s Market

by | Jun 16, 2016 | Packaging

A vertical form fill seal machine, or (vffs), is becoming a common addition to many assembly lines. These machines have developed into fully automated processes that streamline production areas. There are many benefits against these machines. Their uses enable workers to monitor the machine process and quality of products. However, this also enable companies to produce more items than a hand packing method and in a more sterile way.

The Concept
These assembly line production components exist of a number of pieces that are often computer controlled to allow for functionality. All the pieces involve are finely coordinated to ensure that production is effective. This production design ensures that companies can go from a roll of plastic film to sealed and filled product bag. The bags are then inspected, quality assured, and shipped.

The Process Explained
The process begins with a pre-stamped roll of film. The package label and necessary data is already aligned to end up on the outside of the finished product packaging. The films used can be a variety of thickness and materials. Commonly plastic is used. However, paper, fabrics, and even metal foils are also popular packaging materials.

In some industries, such as those that package medical devices, the plastic is previously sterilized for quality purposes. As the vertical form fill seal machine begins to operate, the film is rolled out onto a form that develops a tube. The cylinder shape is sealed off by applying heat. Various mechanical parts are programmed to turn the film into a package. Some pieces seal edges by applying heat, while others are designed to fill each bag that is formed with the correct amount of product.

Before the bags are sealed off, they are usually filled with air, gases, or even a combination of the two. This step in the process services a couple of purposes. For one, the air provides additional protection. This reduces damage to the products inside. Gases are inserted into the bag to prevent bacteria from growing therefore prolonging an items shelf life.

The Benefits
There are a number of benefits that come with this type of product packaging. Beyond the reduction in labor costs as previously discussed, there is also a reduction in material waste. This type of package creates a prolonged shelf life for products. This means that products can be shipped farther. That type of benefit is an added bonus for companies that are wanting to expand their market.

Vertical form fill seal machine are used to package both solid goods and liquids. The machine designs come in a variety of sizes and lay outs depending on the intended use and area in which the machine will be placed.
