How to Limit Your Freight Damage Claims

by | Jun 8, 2017 | Transportation and Logistics

When freight shipping companies pick up your goods, you have little control over what happens next. However, you have more control than you think because there are several things you can do to keep your freight damage claims to a minimum, and these four tips are here to help you.

1. Labeling Tips

Losing items is worse than damaging them. This often happens when the recipient doesn’t know who the package is intended for. You can avoid many of these issues with the right kind of labeling. For example:

  • Don’t stick address labels over box seams. If someone opens the carton or it’s accidentally opened, your label is ruined.
  • Label the top, not bottom of boxes. People working for freight shipping companies can’t see box bottoms and may not bother to check them.
  • Don’t leave old labels on boxes or pallets. This causes confusion.
  • Use backup labeling – each carton should have a duplicate label inside the carton. This protects against misdirected freight.

2. Pallet or Product Staging

Make sure all your pallets are evenly stacked, and nothing is sticking over the sides. Use brightly colored tape to make sure no one accidentally runs into the materials. Stack loose materials carefully, so they can’t fall.

3. Prevent Moisture

If your palletized loads have to sit outside, they could collect moisture. Make sure to use moisture resistant film and stack products so water cannot pond on the pallets.

4. Consider Air Ride Trailers for Fragile Loads

Some freight shipping companies offer both air ride and spring suspension trailers. If your loads need special care, consider using an air ride trailer. It costs more but can save you on damages.

5. Inspect Each Trailer

Make sure your loaders walk inside and inspect each trailer before loading. Holes in walls can cause gouges and other damages.
