How to Plan for and Find Storage in Canton Ohio

by | May 11, 2016 | Moving

Moving can be an overwhelming process and people’s first instinct is to just start packing. However, with more thought and planning, household items and possessions can be grouped into those that will be moved and those that go into either short-term or long-term storage. Canton Ohio is home to moving companies that can help with both the moving and storing of one’s personal possessions.

Planning for Storage
The first step is to go through the home and determine what will be moved into the new home and what will be placed in storage. Perhaps the new home is not ready for moving in and some items need to be stored yet remain accessible while living in a temporary residence.

Items that might be accessed more frequently should be grouped together. The movers should be made aware that these are the ones that would be kept together in the front of the storage vault.

Packing Items
Items to be stored should be packed in boxes in the same manner as those to be moved. Valuables should be protected using newspaper, bubble wrap and the like. Spaces in the boxes should be filled in with packing material but boxes should not be too heavy as they will be stacked upon each other.

If storing furniture such as dressers and perhaps appliances, the drawers can be used to store items such as bedding, linens, clothing or even books. Make sure that the movers know to leave the door of that drawer or appliance open a little so air can circulate.

Finally, create a map of the storage vault so that items can easily be retrieved if necessary. Have an aisle down the middle to facilitate navigating through the space.

Finding a Facility
There are some factors to consider when selecting a moving company that also provides storage capabilities.

Frequency of access will determine how close to your new or temporary home it needs to be. A facility that is close by will make it easier to get to if the plan is to access it on a regular basis.

Look for facilities that are equipped with alarms, after-hours security personnel, fire suppression systems, and heating and ventilation. Being able to tour the facility will determine whether it will meet both short-term and long-term needs.
