You count on your dishwasher to ensure that your dishes are clean for your family to eat on. If you notice a funny smell coming from the appliance, this can be incredibly disconcerting. There could be many reasons why your dishwasher smells, and cleaning your dishwasher may get rid of the odor. If the funk returns, you may have a more serious issue on your hands that will require a call to appliance repair in Thousand Oaks.
Clean the Drain Filter
The drain filter is placed in your dishwasher to ensure that food particles don’t clog the drain. Since the food gets stuck in the appliance, this could be contributing to the foul smell. Remove any food particles that you see, then remove the filter and wash it in the sink with warm water, dish soap and a brush. After it is clean, you can replace it in the machine.
Use Vinegar and Baking Soda
Vinegar and baking soda are both safe and gentle cleaners and deodorizers that you can use on your dishwasher to rid it of unpleasant smells. You’ll need to empty the machine of all dishes, and then place a cup of white vinegar in a bowl on the top rack. Run the dishwasher on the hottest cycle it has.
Once the cycle is complete, you’ll then remove the bowl and sprinkle a cup of baking soda onto the floor of the machine. You’ll then run a short cycle on the hottest temperature available. The machine should be odor-free after this step. If it’s not, you might consider calling a company that offers appliance repair in Thousand Oaks to make sure there aren’t serious issues in other parts of the machine that could be contributing to the smell.
