LED or Fluorescent – Which is Best?

Today, many people are enjoying the benefits of switching over to LED tubes for light. This can be an excellent idea but a decision as major as lighting should be done only after careful consideration. Here are some important things to think about if you are deciding between LED and fluorescent light.

Fluorescent Cost

If you are concerned about initial costs, you may want to go with fluorescent light. This kind of lighting has been around since the 1930s and it is so common, the price is very reasonable. In fact, when you are thinking about replacing incandescent with fluorescent, it may not take long at all to recoup your original investment.

Fluorescent is much cheaper to run than standard incandescent lights. Plus, you new lights will not put out nowhere near the heat, incandescent lighting provides. In summer, this can be a major concern because a significant amount of old fashion lights can put a strain on an HVAC system.

LED Costs

Installing LED lights will set you back some, especially if you opt for an entirely new system. In fact, you can expect to pay considerably more for LED tubes than fluorescent (as much as 10 times more per bulb). On the surface this may appear expensive, but you may eventually make up the difference with the increased energy savings.

Safety

LED light is the safest option. For example, the average LED fixture runs on very low voltage (3 volts or less). There is little chance for electrical fires and LED is cool to the touch. In some areas, burns can be a major safety concern.

Which is the Best Option?

The kind of light you choose will depend on your needs. For example, a small business may not be able to afford the significant installation costs associated with LED. It may take a very long time to recoup this cost and these businesses may be much better off by staying with fluorescent light. After all, there are some very good fluorescent products on the market today and some offer instant light and no flickering options.

LED tubes can be an excellent long term investment. In fact, it is possible to retrofit many applications today and this can save a great deal on the initial costs. LED will provide a significant energy savings on power and cooling costs. Plus, you will spend less money changing bulbs because LED bulbs can last as long as 50,000 hours.

Make sure to consider all the costs and talk to a lighting professional if you have questions.
