Transgender surgery for female to male individuals encompasses a number of different options. While not every transman chooses surgery, many do, but the chosen surgeries can differ between the men by a lot. In most cases, surgery is provided to help with the mismatch a transgender man feels between their body and their gender identity. Having a body that better matches a person’s identity can make them more comfortable and less dysphoric.
Chest Surgery
One of the most common surgeries sought out by transmen is chest surgery. While hormones can help a man lose fat and gain muscle, it doesn’t remove the tissue of the breast. As such, there are several options for creating a male chest. The most common options are double incision surgery, keyhole surgery, and drawstring surgery. The first is best for large or sagging breasts, while the second is better for those with good skin elasticity and small breasts. The latter option is used for medium sized breasts and is less common than the first options.
Hysterectomy & Oophorectomy
Another common transgender surgery for female to male individuals is a hysterectomy and oophorectomy. The first, also called a hysto, involves the removal of the uterus along with its lining. The second, also called an oopho, involves the removal of the ovaries. In most cases, the ovaries are removed at the same time.
There are several reasons to choose these surgery options. It might be because of discomfort having female sexual organs. It may also be chosen due to being at risk of cancer in the ovaries, cervix, or uterus. Some transmen also have this surgery to remove gynecological problems.
Genital Surgery
There are many types of genital surgery available for the female to male patient. It can involve removing or closing the vagina, creating a penis, or creating a scrotum with testicular implants. Sometimes these procedures may be done at the same time or they may need to be done at separate times depending on the surgery and the exact procedure. There are also different sorts of surgeons who specialize in specific parts of the surgery.
