When you aren’t spending time in the luxurious Chania hotels, you’ll likely want to spend your time in Crete taking in the sights and experiencing the attractions. This city is a beautiful place with cobbled streets and boutique stores where you can pick up artwork, clothing, and ceramics. If this is your first time staying in Crete, we wanted to share some of the must-see places to visit. You won’t regret it and the experiences you make will last a lifetime.
Old Harbor
Chania’s existence as a port city is something that gives it a lot of its history and you don’t want to miss a chance to check it out on your own. You’ll run into seafood restaurants and other cafes with wooden fishing boats off the land. You’ll want to check out the mosque to the east which has been around since the 1600s. You’ll also find arsenals from ages past, along with a yachting marina. At the very tip of the coast is a lighthouse which has been there since the 1830s.
Maritime Museum of Crete
Also outside the scope of the Chania hotels is the famous Maritime Museum of Crete. You can see exactly what Crete’s history has been with water through various periods like the Byzantine, Turkish, and Venetian times. The museum spans two full floors and you’ll get to see photos, paintings, ships, and even ancient nautical equipment. Make sure you visit the Moro dock, where you can see a reconstruction of a Minoan ship from the 15th century.
Botanic Park & Gardens of Crete
Crete’s climate is sunny and warm, which has led to great success growing grapes, olives, and a selection of tropical fruits. At the Botanic Park & Gardens of Crete, you’ll get to travel a long path with exotic fruit trees and flowers every step you take. These are from around the globe and everything is labeled so you can research it later if you wish. The tour comes with a free bottle of water and you can pick up a hat and walking stick before going inside.
