Tips For Vibrant Orchids

Caring for orchids does not have to be complicated. There are specific conditions that orchids grow well in and if you provide that, you will be rewarded with beautiful flowers. Here are a few tips to remember to make sure your orchid stays healthy and its flowers are showstoppers.

Provide Airflow and Filtered Light

Stagnant air promotes the proliferation of bugs in the crevices of your plant. Make sure that there is slight airflow to discourage bugs from making your orchid their home. A great deal of orchids enjoy a well- lit room that is at the same time not too bright in intensity.

Repot Your Orchid

It is unlikely that you will have to repot your orchid often due to it outgrowing its pot. The reason for repotting your orchid is to give it an optimum quality of growing medium such as charcoal, stone, or bark. Old growing medium breaks down from its bark-like texture and becomes like dirt, which smothers the orchid’s roots. When caring for orchids make sure to repot at least once a year ideally after your plant has bloomed.

Water Weekly

The orchid’s natural habitat is in the humid tropics where they get drenched with water. Help mimic their natural environment by thoroughly watering them once a week so that their growing medium is soaked. This soaked growing medium will provide the humidity they love throughout the week. This also replicates the wet-dry cycle that they like.

Fertilize

Make sure your orchid gets the right amount of nutrients by fertilizing it. For best results, fertilize right after watering. Since orchids are sensitive to salts in fertilizer, use a weak mixture of a specialized orchid fertilizer and make sure it is urea free and water soluble. Do this three times a month for vibrant and optimum growth.

Following these tips will make a big difference in the health of your orchid. Caring for orchids will reward you with a healthy plant and ample blooms. For more information contact BGI at (561) 374-9216. You can follow them on Twitter for more updates!
