What is an Air Diaphragm Pump?

If you are in the beverage processing industry you have the need for many types of pumping equipment and murzan pumps are very popular because they utilize air operated diaphragm mechanisms. But what does “air diaphragm pump” mean? In order to help you understand how these pumps work, here is information on diaphragm pumps and pneumatic methods.

Pumps

Pumps move liquid or gaseous materials by sucking them into one side of the unit and expelling them out the other. Some pumps use pistons or gears and others utilize diaphragms. A diaphragm or membrane is similar to a fireplace bellows and in Murzan pumps they perform the same basic tasks as pistons. Membranes are usually made from rubber or thermoplastic materials.

As the membrane moves up, it flexes and draws fluid into the chamber. When it moves downward it expels the fluid. The human heart uses valves which act as diaphragms to pump blood throughout the body.

Actuators

Diaphragm mechanisms can be activated by gears, cranks or levers. They are mechanical in nature. In addition, membrane mechanisms can be activated by air or hydraulic pressure. One side of the membrane stays in the liquid to be pumped, while the other side contains air pressure or hydraulic fluid. This kind of pump utilizes check valves to make sure the pumping action is not reversed.

Air Activation

In a pneumatically activated pump (like Murzan pumps) part of the pump housing contains a piston which directs air into two separate areas (double pump) A rod connects both diaphragms and when one is in suction mode, the other is in expel mode.

The Importance of Stainless Steel Housing Pumps

If your liquids must be kept sanitary, stainless steel pumps are a must. This is why Murzan pumps are made specifically for these needs. Your pump distributor can show you more information.
