Supplemental Security Disability Income (SSDI) is a program offered by the US federal government, the program can provide financial assistance to those that suffer from a disability. SSDI payments are different than disability pay, usually disability payments under SSDI, Social Security Disability Insurance, are available to those applicants who have sufficient work credits and have a disability which is expected to last for a year or more or result in death. SSDI benefits do not require that the applicant has ever worked at all.
Children with significant disabilities such as mental retardation, blind, severe heart defects, etc are recipients of part of the available funds; the amount that is provided is based somewhat on the income level of the parents. It is not only disabled children of course than can benefit, adults that are permanently disabled are eligible as well even though they may never have worked a day in their life.
One of the more useful aspects of qualifying for SSDI income is that the successful applicant becomes eligible for state sponsored medical insurance. The disabled individual can also have private medical insurance but having this has no detrimental impact on their being eligible for Medicaid. The primary problem with medical care funded by the state is finding a medical practitioner who will accept the patient. Those disabled individuals that live close to a state university hospital are fortunate as these institutions are obliged to accept these patients.
There are some conditions that are obviously severe enough to warrant automatic approval of the application, however, at other times the applicant may be asked to prove beyond doubt that the condition they suffer from is truly disabling. Applicants who have mental issues which deny them the ability to work and earn an income are often subjected to tests and examinations by the state in order to qualify. Depending on the circumstances it may be necessary for the recipient of SSDI to take further tests annually as the condition is expected to improve.
The application information and forms are available from any office of the Social Security Administration. In many cases hospitals have forms on hand to allow the parents of a child born with a severe disability to make application with the assistance of medical personnel familiar with the disorder. It is important that the application for SSDI income be presented promptly as the funds are backdated to the date of application.
