Applying insulation to metal studs or metal plate is a difficult process if you don’t have the correct equipment and supplies. Using insulation studs and a portable capacitor discharge stud welder offers a quick, easy and effective way for anyone to securely attach insulation in a way that is highly efficient.
There are different types of insulation studs on the market. The two most common options are weld pins and cup head pins. Cup head pins are typically used in HVAC systems or other types of applications using sheet metal and metal housings.
The cup head pin has a wider head with a washer. There are different sizes of pins and washers, and standard options will be 12 and 14 gauge. The length of the pins are typically from three eights of an inch up to six inches depending on the type of insulation in use.
Using the Capacitator Discharge Stud Welder
In just a few minutes anyone can be comfortable with installing and welding insulation studs. Top models of this light, portable devices will offer the ability to complete both gap or contact welding. The systems will also have indicator lights that will let the operator check the status of the equipment for correct use.
For contact capacitor discharge welding, the operator will simply ensure the insulation is the correct position on the sheet metal. The cup head pin is placed on the gun and passed through the insulation until the end of the stud touches the surface of the sheet metal. The operator then pulls the trigger, which creates the arc that melts the tip of the stud and the surface of the sheet metal, creating a secure attachment.
The system then resets and is ready to apply the next cup head pin. Top models of these stud welders can complete 24 welds per minute, allowing the operator to work at full capacity while still creating reliable, durable welds.
